Brief Playing history: Almost all his footballer career he played for Aberdeen as a central defender forming a great defence with Willie Miller. He played for Aberdeen when the team had a great success, winning 3 times the Scottish Premier league, 4 times the Scottish Cup, twice the Scottish League Cup and 2 european trophees: European Super Cup and European Cup Winners Cup. He also played for Scotland in three consecutive World Cups and he decided to end his professional football player career at Motherwell.

Brief Management history: In 1994, after leaving Aberdeen he became a player-coach for Motherwell, but one year later he quit playing and remained as a manager until 1998 for the club. In 1998 he moved to Hibernian and won Scottish League First Division and in 2001 he made the big step to Rangers where he won twice the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Cup and 3 times the Scottish League Cup in 5 years coaching the team. In 2007 he tried his luck as Scotland’s manager but soon after, he left the team to sign with Birmingham City.
