Glasgow Rangers - Dundee United (3-1): Highlights

Rangers survived a late rally by Dundee United as they gained another crucial three points in the title race.
The Ibrox team looked to have sewn the game up with two early goals from Nacho Novo.
However, Mark De Vries’ header 14 minutes from time led to an anxious few minutes for Rangers until substitute Jean-Claude Darcheville slid home their third goal in the last minute.
Rangers looked tired in the second half but still managed an important victory.

There were 2 games in the SPL last night Celtic played Dundee Utd & Hibernian played Motherwell. Celtic were looking to put pressure on league leaders Rangers but failed to get past the defence of Dundee Utd in an exciting 0-0 draw. Motherwell were looking to put more distance between themselves and Dundee Utd in the hunt for 3rd place and the coveted UEFA Cup spot.

With Rangers still 4 points ahead of Celtic the title race may come down to the “Old Firm” games that are left unless one of the two drop points. Also the hunt for 3rd place is still ongoing between Motherwell, Dundee United & Hibs. While at the bottom of the table Gretna still look favourites to go down with Kilmarnock trailing them by 6 points.

Under Craig Levein Dundee United have looked like a brand new team, and they currently reside 3rd in hte league and they will be hoping to be there at the end of the season and earn a much deserved UEFA Cup spot, But with top scorer Barry Robson now at Celtic they will have to rely on Hunt for the goals. Falkirk are surprisingly in the top half of the table and Mark Hughes has expressed his desire for Falkirk to enter the Intertoto Cup and hopefully gain some European experience for his squad.

Description: Tannadice stadium became an all-seater stadium since 1994 and it has five stands. The Jerry Kerr Stand was originally built in 1962, but until 2003 it was named the Main Stand. The Fair Play Stand is the newest addition to the stadium and it was built in 1997. The West Stand, also called The Shed, was built in 1957 and it still has the same roof since it was built. Along the north side of the stadium, in 1991-1992, a two tier stand was built named after a long serving club director, called the George Fox Stand. The East Stand, opened in 1994, is similar to George Fox Stand.

Brief History: Tannadice Park is the home of Dundee United since 1882 and it’s built really close to Dens Park, the new Dundee FC Ground. During time, Dundee United has it’s biggest performances here. The stadium was renovated twice, once in 1909 and once in the 1990s where almost all stands were rebuilt in more modern way, or had severe modification. All new stands are fully seated and from 1994 Tannadice is all-seated.

SPL LeagueRangers remain 4 points clear at the top of the SPL after there 4-0 win over St Mirren whittaker got 2 goals with Boyd and Bruke taking the others. Second place Celtic struggled to a 1-0 win over Falkirk with Scott Mcdonald scoring just before the first half break. Dundee United move into 3rd place after they beat Kilmarnock 2-1 with Robson grabbing another goal (i would be surprised to see him still at Dundee United after the transfer window). However Motherwell (4th) have 3 games in hand.

Brief Playing History: In all 16 years when he played professional football, he played only for 2 clubs. He began his football career in 1981, when he signed with Cowdenbeath. He was a good defender and he quickly gained his place in Cowdenbeath’s first team. A couple of years later, he moved to Heart of Midlothian where he played almost every match from start. In 1985 and 1986 he won the Scottish Young Player of the Year award and he earned a place in Scotland’s International Team for World Championships in 1990. He ended his professional football player career in 1997 at Heart of Midlothian after playing 14 consecutive years for this club.

Brief Management history: After finishing his footballer career he started coaching where he started playing, at Cowdenbeath, who were struggling in Scotland’s second division. He quickly modified the team into one that would fight for promotion but he moved to Hearts in 2000, the team where he played 14 years. In 2004 he tried his coaching abilities in England at Leicester City, but in 2006 he came back in Scotland and took over Dundee United.
