Brief Playing history: In his professional football player career, he played as a center midfielder, but he didn’t had a lot of success and he changed many clubs. He started his career at Celtic in 1980 and he finished it 18 years later at Preston North End.
Brief Management history: After finishing his footballer career at Preston he was appointed as manager for the same team, a team that was struggling in English Second Division. In 2002 he almost took the team to promotion but he lost the playoff with Bolton Wanderers. His performances took him to sign Everton in the same year. Even though Everton wasn’t considered a powerful team, in 2005 he took the team to finish in 4th place in England, managing to qualify Everton for UEFA Champions League preliminaries. He won twice the LMA Manager of the year award in 2003 and 2005 and he made from Everton a top club in England. He managed to do great things with limited amout of money and there are some rumours that he could take over Newcastle soon.
