After the were founded as St Mark’s, in 1880, they took the name Ardwick AFC in 1887 and finally, in 1894 they named themselved Manchester City FC. During time, they managed to win League Championship twice, FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice and the European Cup Winners Cup once.
The best period from the club’s history in between 1960 and 1970, when they’ve won several trophies. Since 1976 they are still waiting to win another major trophy. One of the worst periods for Manchester City when they were relegated twice in three years, getting into the third tier of Brittish football. The biggest rivals they have are their neighbours from Manchester, United, with whom they play every year in Manchester Derby.
They passed over this bad period and they’re back in Premier League fighting for top places and positions that would qualify them in Europeam competitions. In the summer of 2007 the major shareholders decided to sell their shares to Thaksin Shinawatra, former Thailand prime minister.
