Formed in 1876, Middlesbrough turned professional in 1889 and they first won promotion to the first division in 1893. They play at Riverside Stadium since they turn professional but with the stadium’s capacity was upgraded to 35,100 seats in 1995.
Even though they never finished better than 3rd place, which was long time ago, in 1914, they’ve won a couple of trophees and did well in European Championships especially in these last years. Their first major trophee was in 2004, when they won English League Cup, and in 2006 they managed to get into the finals of UEFA cup, following two comebacks from 3-0 in the previous stages.
During time, they had some bad periods, and for a couple of years they were even out of top 2 english divisions. In 1986 they had serious financial problems and then they were bought by a consortium led by current chairman, Steve Gibson. Also, Middlesbrough has one of the biggest communities. Middlesbrough Football Club in the community was founded in 1995 by club chairman Steve Gibson and it’s the largest community based football scheme in the United Kingdom. Middlesbrough supporters come from Middlesbrough itself and from the towns located in the surrounding area.
