The Tyne-Wear derby that is played with their biggest rivals, Sunderland, has been played since 1898.

Newcastle supporters call themselves Toon Army or the Geordies. Having a large fanbase, Newcastle has 3rd average attendance from premiership. In a survey in 2007, Newcastle fans were found the most dedicated fans from England and even the former prime minister of England, Tony Blair, is known to be a fan of Newcastle. The toon comes from the Geordie pronunciation of the town. Alan Shearer was one of the best players that ever played at Newcastle, being the top goalscorer for the Toon. In 10 years, between 1996 and 2006 he scored 206 goals for Newcastle.

From june 7, 2007 the club was bought by Mike Ashley who will invest a lot of money to increase the stadium’s capacity to at least 60,000 and to buy new-talent for the team, He has already invested over 100million into the club and is well known for sitting with the fans & going out on “the toon” drinking with fans of Newcastle United.
