Portsmouth is based in the south coast city with the same name. Their nickname, “Pompey” also comes from the nickname of the city. Founded in 1898 by the owner of a local brewery, they joined in 1899 southern league and managed to win 20 from 28 matchen from it’s first season. They had a couple of hard times, they relegated even into division three but they always came back in English Premier League.
In 2002, Harry Redknapp was appointed as manager while Portsmouth was still in English Division One. They managed to win it and they promoted into Premier League where they want to perform really good at every match. Probably their main rivals are Southampton because the clubs are close to each other.
In it’s first years after promotion the club was stuggling to remain in the first tier, and after being bought by businessman Alexandre Gaydamak they started to make big-name signings and managed to finish in the top half of the table in last year’s season and this season they plan to beat their best finish. In late 2007 a couple of rumours appeared about irish property developers, Brian and Luke Comer, that were interested in buying all shares from Alexandre Gaydamak.
