UEFA set to hand Cardiff Euro lifeline

Cardiff City may be given a wildcard into Europe if they win the FA Cup, UEFA spokesman William Gaillard revealed on Monday.

Under current Football Association (FA) rules, the Bluebirds would not qualify for the UEFA Cup as Welsh clubs only qualify through their own competitions.

But Cardiff, who face Portsmouth on May 17 after beating Barnsley in the last four on Sunday, may be given a lifeline by European football’s governing body.

UEFA president Michel Platini had already pledged to help Cardiff if they were to win the FA Cup and Gaillard confirmed that there is a lot of sympathy for the Welsh side.

“Our president has asked the executive committee to look at the possibility of a wildcard,” Gaillard told BBC Sport.

“From our point of view it would be sad if they win the FA Cup and cannot compete in Europe.

“So we will be suggesting this to the executive committee. There is a lot of sympathy for Cardiff and I would expect it to go their way.”

Gaillard added that no decision will be made before the final.

Surely this also depends on the Welsh F.A. to give permission as well as they are the reason why the three welsh clubs Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham don`t play in the Welsh Cup anymore because the idiots in charge of the Welsh F.A. told them that they must join the League Of Wales if they wanted to contiune to compete in the Welsh Cup which the winners qualified for Europe as Wrexham did a few times and have managed to get to the quarter finals of The Cup Winners Cup (no longer around). Let`s be honest the three Welsh League Clubs are never going to do that so they were thrown out of the cup and that`s why no-one hardly knows about it now because the winners are from The League Of Wales and never ever get past the 1st qualifying round because the standard is rubbish. The 3 clubs now compete in the F.A.W Premier Cup which does not get you into Europe although there was talk about 12-18 months ago but nothing came of it.
I hope for common sense and for Cardiff`s sake that this rule is changed as I fancy Cardiff to definitely win the F.A.Cup as they play more attractive football and are stronger in most areas of the pitch even though they are in a lower league and that`s coming from a Wrexham fan who are staring relegation from the football league for the first time in their history and I am afraid is now inevitable.

    Good Luck Cardiff

Do it for Wales - We are all behind you!!
