Brief Playing history: Smith signed as a defender to Dundee United in 1966. He wasn’t really talented, but he was devoted to the club, and he played for Dundee in 108 games, scoring 2 goals. He also played for Dumbarton in the same position and appeared in 44 games.
Brief Management history: After finishing his footballer career he remained at Dundee United where he developed his coaching skills. In 1978 he was appointed as Scotland’s Under 18 team and 4 years later he managed to win European Youth Championship in 1982. Soon, he became coach for Under-21 team and a couple of years later he was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at the 1986 Mexico World Cup. In 1991 he was named as Ranger’s coach and then it started the best period from it’s coaching career. He managed to win Scottish Premier League 7 times in a row and he also won 3 Scottish Cups and 4 times the Scottish League cup. After his great success he tried to move in England at Everton, but he didn’t had the same success with them. In 2004 he started coaching Scotland’s team and he had spectacular results in the qualifying group against France and Italy. In 2007, he decided to return to the club where he had the best results, and maybe he could repeat his performances.
